FLORIDA HAS TERRIFIC TAFFIES, TARTAN TREASURES and PRECIOUS PADDIES galore, we are pleased to report.

My friends know I am the hugest Irishophile, have never met an Irishman I didn't adore and have spent too many happy times in Irish pubs. So absolutely wanted an Irish page on my website. I planned to list all Irish pubs in Florida but that emerged as an impossible task. Pourquoi? Because bejazus, there are literally thousands of them. There are the fake Irish pubs run by wannabe-Irish-so-badly Americans, with shamrocks on everything but not one owner or bartender with an Irish accent. Then there are the genuine warm Irish-owned and run pubs which are so glorious I never want to leave--PK.

MARCH 17 every year--St. Patrick's Day. Totally over the top in the USA celebrated by Americans pretending to be Irish who have never even been to Ireland.  Best St. Patrick's Day parties:
I have been to the two pubs below for their St. Patrick's Day parties and recommend them highly. Both have huge, well-attended events in and around their pub, with bands, extra food and drink tents and a glorious festival atmosphere outside.   1] John Martin's Pub in Miami [Coral Gables] 305-445-3777 www.johnmartins.com  Irish owner Martin Lynch.   2] The Field in West Ft. Lauderdale [954] 964-5979. Irish owner Hilary Joyelle.

MIAMI BEACH [on South Beach] PLAYWRIGHT'S, AN EXCELLENT GENUINE IRISH PUB, frequented by many English, Scottish and Irish customers. Irish and English owners/staff.[305] 534-0667   I have been many times, have held British Network functions there and highly recommend their home-made Irish stew. --PK

THE FIELD...one of my favourite Irish pubs. In June 2001 I wrote this in  Union Jack Newspaper about The Field: "It's pretty hard to see how this pub can fail." Indeed from the moment doors opened on May 10, 2001 The Field Pub has been thronged. Charming Irish owner Hilary Joyalle, who established previous local Irish pubs. Its genesis is the former British Oak, a beautiful pub which sat unopened for over 2 years, like a jilted bride in her wedding dress. I promoted and rounded up some 50 guests for the British Oak's pre-view partypk_alan_craig on January 15, 1999 and trumpeted its imminent opening in this column. Subsequently I fielded [excuse prescient pun] queries from Brits for 2 years about when the wonderful new watering hole would welcome them in. So I'm especially thrilled that eventually the building was taken over by Irish owners Alan Craig and Hilary Joyalle, who enhanced it even more into an Irish pub. It was named after the film starring Irish actor Richard Harris. I've been there many times and held FABB functions and meetings there. The real charm and allure of the place is the unusual layout. Rooms lead off cosy rooms, seemingly forever, varied hearths filled with warm wood, books, brass, bric-a-brac and......Oh God, you get the picture. Irish people zoom out of the womb with blueprints for great pubs. THE FIELD Tel. (954) 964-5979. Address 3281 Griffin Road, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312. Live entertainment, including bands from Ireland. Full menu from excellent chefs. Full liquor. English, Irish beers and ciders.--PK
