Please note to Brits in UK: You
cannot get Florida car insurance until you actually arrive IN Florida.
It cannot be done from the UK beforehand. Florida authorities will
want to see you and your actual proof of residency documents.
CAR INSURANCE FOR BRITS IN FLORIDA
FABB advises:
Since the
Florida lawchange in 2002, it is hard for new Brits with no USA driving
record to get insured here. Newcomer resident Brits will pay a higher rate for a
while. Many companies will not insure you without a Florida resident's
drivers licence and to get that you have to prove residency. FABB

American-owned but owner says 75% of his clients are still Brits

overcome problems.
- British
visitors should bring their international licence, valid to drive with
in Florida. Florida does not issue drivers licences to visitors.
- British visitors cannot buy a car here. That's because you won't be able to get insurance without official proof of residency.
- British permanent residents on work visas/Green Cards must get a Florida drivers licence--it's asked for as ID often in Florida shops and elsewhere.

FLORIDA WEBSITE FOR DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES:

You must have proof of Florida residency. Visitors from UK and
non-resident Brits will only be issued a Florida's driver's licence
until the expiry date shown on your immigration documents, up to a
maximum of 2 years--USA Immigration law. You have to go in person to
your nearest driver's licence centre, with your UK passport and current
immigration documents/visa. Again: British visitors can get a licence
only for the period they are allowed to stay in Florida. You have to
re-apply each time you come over to Florida, but there is no limit to
