 Since Florida law changed in 2002,  it is difficult for new Brits with no USA driving record to get insured here.  Visitors from UK with no proof of Florida residency are usually denied outright by most insurance companies.   You can  purchase a car without a Florida Driver's licence but it's not easy.  Newcomer resident Brits will usually pay a higher rate till they get established. The USA does not recognise your UK driving record, however perfect.    Many companies will not insure you without a Florida resident's driver's licence and to get that you have to prove residency.   In Florida it is the CAR not the driver who is insured--good news.   So anybody [with a licence] who drives your car is insured, with certain restrictions, of course.    NEW EMIGRANTS:   Florida authorities want to see you in person with your actual proof of residency documents, to obtain a Florida licence.

•  British visitors should bring their international or UK licence, valid to drive with while visiting Florida.    Florida does not issue state drivers licences to visitors.  [That has been the case since 9-11,  as an anti-terrorist security measure]. 
  

• British visitors, on a tourist visa,  including those who own a holiday home here and spend several months a year here,  may have difficulty buying a car in Florida.  That's because you can't get insurance without official proof of residency.  Also where are you going to store it safely for your months back in UK?  Most visitors find it better to rent a car each time they come over to Florida.
  
• British permanent residents on work visas/Green Cards must get a Florida drivers licence-----it's asked for as ID often in Florida shops and elsewhere.   You must show proof of Florida residency at the Driver's Licence Centre.

 WHAT YOU NEED:     Visitors from UK and non-resident Brits will only be issued a Florida's driver's licence until the expiry date shown on your immigration documents, up to a maximum of 2 years--USA Immigration law.  You have to go in person to your nearest driver's licence centre, with your UK passport and current immigration documents/visa.   Non-residents have to re-apply each time you come over to Florida, but there is no limit to the number of times you can apply.   For questions, call the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles in Tallassee: [850] 922-9000.
