That has been the case for many years.  In the USA all UK passport renewals [for Florida and other 49 states] are handled centrally out of the British Embassy in Washington via their website    www.ukinusa.fco.gov.uk    Click on British Passports info--for passport application forms, a list of fees, and what you need to send with your passport application).    NOTE:   If you wish to speak to an actual person, the Embassy's service delivery partner for passports, Abtran, will answer your telephone enquiries on 1-800-285-7277 FOR A FEE. Outrageous but that chnage was made by the Blair government.

NOTE EMERGENCY ONLY FOR FLORIDA BRITS:    The Orlando Consulate can provide you with an emergency travel document if your passport has been lost or stolen only but has not expired.   Don't just turn up, you need to make an appointment for any service provided by the Consulate by calling (407) 254-3300.   EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT    Click here for the very latest from the Consulate on how to get an emergency travel document. http://www.ukinusa.fco.gov.uk

ATTENTION BRITONS IN FLORIDA [RESIDENTS and VISITORS]:    DO YOU NEED TO REGISTER WITH THE CONSULATE? You don't have to, but the Consulate encourages all British nationals living and travelling overseas to register with the Foreign Office's new on-line registration system called Locate. What are the benefits of registering? Many, but just think, if a catastrophe occurs, such as a major hurricane, tsunami, or terrorist attack, the Consulate will have an instant record of your details so that they can contact you to make sure you’re OK and provide advice and assistance. Or if family and friends need to get in touch with you urgently, for example if a family member dies when you are away on your holidays, the Consulate can help them to find you. More information: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travelling-and-living-overseas/Locate/

BACKROUND NOTE:      In January 2007 the British Consulate in Miami was made a full Consulate-General, reflecting the growing importance of Florida to the British Government. The Orlando office remains just a Consulate.   The Consul-General's team in Miami performs the full range of consulate roles, including consular, trade and investment, and political. The consulate in Orlando performs only consular work, with their focus on the many thousands of UK visitors to the area each year. The British Consulate in Orlando is responsible for providing Consular Services (i.e. Support for British nationals) throughout Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. This office is also responsible for managing the British government response to any catastrophe, such as a major hurricane etc, that may occur in the region. Their services range from providing assistance if you have suffered rape, or a serious assault, are a victim of crime, in hospital or if you have been arrested or are in jail. They also offer help and support in a range of other cases, such as child abductions, death of relatives overseas, missing people, kidnapping, and assisting Brits suffering from a mental illness.

Excerpt from Patricia Kawaja's Union Jack Newspaper column January 2010:         Florida has a new Consul-General.   Effective Januray 2010,  Scotsman Kevin McGurgan replaces fellow Scot Keith Allan, just promoted to be Her Majesty's Ambassador to Turkmenistan.  Of Scots, Florida has lots.  I will suggest to the new Consul that he opens the Ft. Lauderdale Scottish Festival.  H.M. Consul-General joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1990 and comes to the Miami Consulate [305] 374-1522 from Afghanistan, where he was Deputy Head of the NATO Provincial Reconstruction Team.  He has a proven track record of delivery in political negotiation, lobbying and crisis management and international security issues. Until 2007 he was Deputy Head of the Iraq Policy Unit, responsible for political and security advice to British Ministers on the situation in southern Iraq.  [After Iraq and Afghanistan,  Our Kev deserves a spell amongst our peaceful  palm trees, methinks--PK].   He then worked at the Home Office, providing advice on countries, regions and institutions of strategic importance to the UK.  In his previous USA posting from 1997 - 2000, he was lead UK negotiator in New York at the United Nations, on multilateral sanctions regimes, including enforcement of sanctions against Libya and Saddam Hussein's Iraq, Asia (the Taliban) and diamond/arms embargoes in Africa.  He also served the FCO briefly in Russia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Syria, was a UK press officer to the European Union, a political and consular officer in Bosnia and was two years Head of the Political and Economic team in Sweden.  In London from 2000-2003, he led FCO's Croatia, Serbian and Balkans war criminal teams, delivering British Government policy before and after the transfer of Slobodan Milosevic to The Hague, and on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.  Within the FCO he assesses candidates for promotion and is also a qualified Trauma Risk Management Assessor. Kevin, who is joined by Scottish wife Vicki, and sons, Alexander and Michael, enjoys cycling. Lucky, since Miami’s flatter than Afghanistan and fewer people shoot at you.   Our healthy Man of the Heather will also run the downtown Miami ING half marathon for charity this month. That race runs right past my building every January and I always wait at the finish line to cheer on the many runners from the UK. It starts at 5a.m. so note I said finish not start line. As owner of the British Bureau of Florida,  this will be the sixth British Consul-General in Florida I have worked with, [Philip Grice, Rob Hoffman, Rob Bayliss, Simon Davey, Keith Allan], varying by popularity, and efficacy. Keith Allan was particularly engaged, engaging and efficient I found.  So a warm British welcome, Mr. McGurgan, from your expatriate constituents across the Sunshine State.
